Physical Characteristics
Unlike their fairy cousins who were created by artificial means, dryads are formed naturally within their home tree. While essentially elven in appearance, their skin tones take on a tint that ranges from cream to green in color. Their eyes are always blue, lime, or green in appearance. Their hair is made up of strands just like any typical elf, but will always be a rich green in color. Their height and weight are directly proportional to their home tree, with some dryads being as small as 4'6" while others are as large as 7'. Their weight also ranges from 90 to 220 lbs depending on the size of their home tree. Dryads are able to venture any distance away from their home tree, the bond between the two not being fully understood by modern aetherial knowledge. Unlike fairies, they can be injured and killed but may be reborn within their home tree. They don't require any food or aetherial intake, all of which are provided by their home tree. If their home tree starts to die or weakens, the dryad will die or weaken along with it. If their home tree is robbed of aetherial energy then the dryad will slowly wither and die unless the aetherial energy to their home tree is replenished. Dryads cannot be corrupted by chaotic aether, but their home tree can be. If their home tree is corrupted by chaotic aether, the dryad will display the same behavioral signs as a dark fairy.
Mental Characteristics
Dryads have two sets of senses, their own and their home tree's. They are forever linked with the tree that spawned them, and if the tree is hurt or injured the dryad will also feel the pain. If the home tree is in a seasonal climate and goes into hibernation for the winter, then the dryad will also go into hibernation, not being able to awake until the tree blooms in the spring. Dryads feel aether in the same way as humans do, and must put in applied effort in order to draw upon aetherial energy, however they are far more limited in the magic they can produce. Dryads can not only feel the pain of their own tree but also the pain or general health of any tree they touch or walk near. They can even tell if a person is ill or injured, and have an affinity for healing magic. If the dryad is killed, and they are reborn within their home tree, they will remember fragments of their past life but never the full picture.
History
Dryads were completely unknown to the rest of the world until the year 1733 AE, when a few started venturing from their home in the Arcadian Wilderness. Since then there have been many more sightings, which has caught the interest of various parties. The aesiri took it upon themselves to invite a few to their magic academies to act as aetherial research subjects, and surprisingly a few accepted this proposition. Humanity has had less interest in dryads in general, but has openly accepted them into their towns.
