In the deep north, barbaric city states battle for resources and control over the inhospitable tundra. The Unaligned Northern States are a collection of city states which constantly launch raids against each other and even against the more civilized nations down south. Their hierarchy is simple, the strongest rule and the weak perish. These city states are known to raid undefended towns south of the Northwatch Channel and capture slaves. These slaves are brought back to the city state and are either put to hard labor until they die or forced to fight in an arena until they emerge victorious or perish. As resources vanish in the northern lands, raids further south are becoming ever more frequent. Southern nations will need to reinforce their borders if they ever hope to keep the barbarians of the north at bay.

History

The skaeggen have been around since ancient times. While the majority of humanity lived in small villages along the western shores of Exodius, some tribes ventured north and arrived in the Skaeggen Tundra. These tribes were forced to adapt, in order to survive the crippling cold winters and short summers.

Vegetation was scarce, skaeggens relied on hunting for almost all of their supplies. As time went on they were able to master this new environment and form sizeable settlments. But as their numbers grew, the land proved incapable of keeping up. Harvests were usually minimal in yield, and the giant heards of skaeggen elk had dwindled after centuries of excessive hunting.

With the threat of starvation drawing ever closer, skaeggen villages started to raid each other for supplies. The strategy worked, and kept the victors alive while the defeated would die off. After centuries of such raids, only a few villages survived. These villages would go on to become the city states of the present day. Raids into southern lands have become more common ever since the ancient forest was cleared by Exodians millennia ago.
